Improved pulsed field magnetisation in MgB<sub>2</sub> trapped-field magnets

Abstract Bulk superconductors can act as trapped-field magnets with the potential to be used for many applications such portable medical magnet systems and rotating machines. Maximising trapped field, particularly practical magnetisation techniques pulsed field (PFM), still remains a challenge. PFM is dynamic process in which magnetic driven into superconducting bulk over milliseconds. This flux motion causes heating complex interplay between thermal properties. In this work, local density during MgB 2 superconductor has been studied. We find that improving cooling architecture increases trapping capabilities alters PFM. These improvements lead largest (0.95 T) single sample magnetised by solenoidal magnet. The findings illustrate fundamental role plays
